On 17 June 2000, an earthquake occurred in South Iceland, with the epicenter in Holt. It was in the South Iceland Seismic zone. It is a transform zone that connects the western and eastern volcanic zone.

Earthquakes are formed due to the movement of the plates. The theory is called plate tectonics. The plates rub against each other and create pressure. When there is too much pressure, the plates break and earthquakes are form.

The magnitude of the earthquake is 6.6. It is the largest earthquake in the past 88 years. The largest co-seismic motion observed is about 0.55m. The hypo central location of the earthquake was at 63.977°N, 20.713°W and 5.1 km depth. The aftershocks extended for about 16-18 km North-South.

The Iceland Civil Service Defense issued press release to the state broadcasting System. The mass media emphasized on the ground dislocation and damaged, but disclosed little about the positive aspects.

Most of the damage occurred in a village named Hella. No houses collapsed but many houses were badly damaged that it had to be abandoned. Shocks absorbers could be used to reduce building damaged. Heavy things being put at the bottom of shelves or cabinets can reduce the changes of the shelves or cabinets collapsing.
